Abby's Top 10 Recommended Books
Abby’s Top Ten Favorite Emergency Preparedness Books
1. Basic Preparedness by The Survival Center
Contents include food storage, water storage, medical supplies & sanitation, shelter, grains, processing food, household products, tools, homesteading, alternative energy, self defense, sovereignty and resources.
I put this book on the top of my top ten favorite emergency preparedness books list because I know the author and know that they speak from over 30 years of experience. I personally use this book as a text book in some of the classes I teach and recommend that everyone include it in their resource library. I refer to it all the time and find it easy to use, clear and concise. If you only buy one book buy this one! Cost $19.95
2. Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook by David Werner, Carol Thuman, and Jane Maxwell
Contents include a complete guide to medical services including how to treat ailments and accidents for the layperson.
I recommend this as the best first aid book available. This book was written for those traveling to third world countries that might not have easy access to professional medical care. In times of emergency we all might be without access to the professionals and we each need to learn the basic and sometimes not so basic skills to save the lives of our loved ones. If you are going to buy two books, put this one on your list and let go your old copy of Red Cross First Aid or the Boy Scout First Aid Manual. This book beats them both hands down. Cost $
3. Where There is No Dentist by Murray DicksonContents include a complete guide to dental services including preventative care and dental emergencies.
Again I recommend this book for the same reasons I recommend Where There is No Doctor. These two books should be considered companion books and should be in the first aid kit of every family. Cost $
4. ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COUTRY LIVING An Old Fashioned Recipe Book by Carla Emery.
Contents include
I have owned a copy of this book for over 25 years and although my original copy is dog eared and stained I still love it. With a touch of humor Carla has covered all homesteading subjects which are directly related to emergency preparedeness. If you don’t know how to do something, Carla can explain how to do it. If you are moving or planning on living in the country this is the book to own. Cost $34.95
5. The SAS Survival Handbook, How to survive in the wild, in any climate, on land or at sea by John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman
Contents include essentials, strategy, climate & terrain, food, camp craft, reading the signs, on the move, health, survival at sea, rescue and disasters.
I like this book because it is easy to read, easy to find subjects, has excellent pictures and graphics and would be useful all over the world. There are other books in the series that are equally as valuable especially The SAS Urban Survival Handbook. Cost $28.95
6. Preparing for Emergencies, Disaster can strike YOU suddenly! By Dr. James McKeever and Mrs. Jeani McKeever
Contents include disasters strike suddenly, water, light and heat, first aid, fire, violence, food, earthquakes, beg-barter-buy or steal, disaster shelter and family action plan.
I liked this book because the authors have lived their truth and come from a place of knowingness. They offer great resources and practical suggestions. The authors have also written other books which are equally as reliable. Cost $12.00
7. Skills For Survival, How Families Can Prepare by Esther Dickey
Contents include family independence, home-produced products, let’s be healthy, emergency preparedness, where to plant food crops when you think there’s no place to plant, working with the soil, important plants, extending your harvest season, growing vegetables in a drought, unusual plants and planting ideas, how to be a plant Doctor, choosing and preparing the best food, recipes, frugal ways with food, cooking and preserving food, don’t let it spoil, observations of people, plants and living things and a great resource section.
Esther Dickey and her family from Utah have written many preparedness books over the years all of which I would like in my library. Passport to Survival by Rita Bingham is Esther’s daughter and has taken on the mantle of continuing to create excellent preparedness books. This family live what they teach and use diagrams and pictures to supplement their words. Cost $17.95
8. SAVING SEEDS The Gardener’s Guide to Growing And Storing Vegetable And Flower Seeds by Marc RogersContents include raising, harvesting, and store seeds for both vegetables and ornamental plants.
I like this book because it is not too technical and in an easy to use way describes how any gardener can save seeds to prepare a collection of non-hybrid seeds for garden use. Of all the seed saving books I have reviewed this one best suited my needs. Cost $12.95
9 Bird Flu Manual by Dr. Grattan WoodsomContains what you can do to treat your family in case of a pandemic influenza. This book is a must have!
Because a pandemic happens in many places at once, it is absurd to believe that the government and an over-extended healthcare system can take care of everyone's needs. We'll face the next pandemic with the resources we personally set aside to do so. The Bird Flu Manual explains what we need to do to prepare in advance of a pandemic (as in now). Most importantly, it explains how we can care for loved ones should they fall ill. Because a pandemic emergency may result - and likely will - in disruptions to basic services such as Internet and electricity, it's a very good idea to have essential information in print, on the bookshelf. That's why this invaluable book is in my library. Cost $
10 A Blank Notebook Last but not least this book is yours to jot down notes, inspiration, dreams, manifestations, journal entries, recipes, instructions and reminders. Keep track of your food storage, the tools, supplies and books you purchase, where you keep them, when they expire and when they need replacement. Keep a wish list going of supplies you would like to acquire. Personally, I like to use notebooks with lined and blank paper and plastic cover sheets for important entries. I often copy items from the internet and file them in my notebook. I tell myself one day I will write the quintessential emergency preparedness book from all my years of notes! Cost priceless
It is my intent to write top ten lists on subjects including food storage, food preparation, gardening, home repair etc to help you build a reference library. I love books and reading and reviewing books is a pleasure and treat for me. This is one goal I will look forward to keeping!
